What is Fabricated Or Cultured Stone?

Our cultured products are a beautiful way to upgrade your kitchen, bath, fireplace, or home remodeling project. But, if you’ve ever shopped for this type of fabriacted stone, you know that there are many options on the market. It can be confusing to understand the terminology associated with the stone industry.

Cultured stone is referring to manufactured stone, and fabricated stone.

Stone veneer, on the other hand, is stone that has been mined from the earth, then cut into uniform shapes and thicknesses for use on fireplaces and walls.

One of the most important aspects of manufactured stone is that it is made of composite materials that are much lighter weight than real stone. This is a highly beneficial characteristic when considering the supporting material required in construction, remodeling, or when designing a professional office. Where local codes require special engineering for masonry walls or real stone countertops, cultured stone easier to install and maintain.

There are many companies offering cultured stone. But, Marble Concepts & Designs, LLC is the largest manufacturer of cultured marble, culture granite, and cultured onyx in Oregon. We have been providing our clients with manufactured stone products for over 20 years. Stop by to view our Showroom in Central Point.

We have invested hard dollars in the research, development and perfection of our products and stand behind our work. We can produce custom products with you or you can use our quality, standard designs that offer a diverse selection of colors and tones.

Cultured stone is a blend of stone particles and resins that is combined with pigments to produce a wide range of colors and realistic, natural looking patterns – cultured marble, cultured granite, and cultured onyx among them. Unlike quarried stone, cultured stone is cast in molds to create specific pieces such as bathtubs, sinks, countertops, backsplashes, moldings and trim, shower walls and shower pans.

The molds are lined with a special gel coat that bonds to the mixture, creating a very hard, transparent surface. After the pieces have cured, they are removed from the molds and polished to shine or given a honed, matte finish, depending on customer preference.

Because cultured products are cast, there are numerous options in terms of size, shape and edge treatments. And, the final product is nonporous. That means there is little maintenance required: no need to seal year after year; no grout lines to clean or wash.

The low maintenance, combined with the affordability, makes cultured stone a popular choice for remodeling, construction and design for homes, apartments, condos, and professional offices.

Clients mention these benefits to use most often....

  • Beautiful: Veining and patterns can be incorporated during the casting process, creating character, depth and interest that mimics its natural counterpart.
  • Low Maintenance: Cultured marble never needs to be sealed and is easy to clean with non-abrasive products.
  • Durable: Cultured marble is non-porous, making it extremely tough and resistant to stains, mildew and chips.
  • Economical: In general, cultured marble is less expensive to fabricate and install than slab marble, but will increase the overall value of a home just as natural stone products will.
  • Customizable: Because it is a cast product, cultured marble offers a wide range of color options and pieces can be shaped to fit your specific needs and decor.

Cultured stone products can be used just about anywhere inside a building. In your home it is well suited for bathrooms, fireplace mantles, window sills, and many other locations.

In a business, commercial application, cultured marble is used in many hotels - motels, fitness centers, nursing homes, hospitals and even restaurants.

What are the benefits of cultured marble over other products?

The main benefit of cultured marble is the ability to eliminate all but a few seams. That means there are fewer areas for mildew to grow, and leaks to start. Cultured marble baths are not totally seamless but compare a couple of hundred inches of smooth twenty-five year silicon to the thousands inches that make the rough and porous grout line found in the average tub-shower walls.

Sinks, vanities, and countertops become one piece with fabricate stone, doing away with the always hard to clean lip around china bowls. Unlike tile, where the porous grout is not waterproof, or natural marble were the stone itself will leak and stain without constant maintenance, cultured marble with silicone seams is absolutely watertight.

Silicone is the same sealant that is keeping the water inside all glass aquariums all around the world. If you are comparing cultured stone with fiberglass, keep in mind that while bot are watertight, fiberglass units constantly flex and therefore are prone to cracking over years of use. Additionally, they are not customizable and since their surface compound is pigmented, it is softer and wears faster than the clear gel coat that covers our colored stone products.

But aside from the technical aspect, cultured marble gives you, unlike any other product, the ability to coordinate your bathroom the way you want to. Choose items in matching or contrasting colors from the sink to tub or shower and surrounding walls, all sized and shaped to fit your particular needs. Contact us today for more information!
